A moldedcarbon case for the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Automatic Skeleton?  Yes please.  As if last year’s absolutely killer lineup of skeleton watches from Roger Dubuis wasn’t enough, 2016 will see the launch of this incredible piece.  A quick rewind:  last year, Roger Dubuis launched its first non-tourbillon skeleton timepiece, powered by its first-ever skeletonized movement with automatic caliber.  It was produced in rose gold, and you can see it right here.  The model you see here and now is the same watch, except housed in a 42mm sheet molded carbon fiber case.

The Caliber RD820-SQ (SQ for “squelette”, or “skeleton”), is designed and built from the ground up as a skeleton caliber (as opposed to being skeletonized after the fact). It is powered by a micro-rotor, visible in the upper left section part of the caliber.  The prominent “5-pointed star” design of the bridges completes the killer look.

As do all Roger Dubuis timepieces, the watch bears the prestigious Geneva Seal (the Poinçon de Genève).

Roger Dubuis has unveiled 5 new pieces this year at SIHH in Geneva, the headliner being the piece you see here.  Though it is not my favorite of Roger Dubuis’ 2017 releases (I’ll get to my fav soon), the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Pirelli Double Flying Tourbillon is one sweet watch.  This new super-limited version of Roger Dubuis’ bold double tourbillon watch also serves as the launch platform for a brand new alliance with Pirelli (yes, the high-end tire maker that is the exclusive supplier of tires for Formula One).  With the rubber inlays are from a set of Pirelli tires that won an F1 race, it seems a natural perquisite of purchasing such an expensive (280,000 Swiss Francs, or about the same in USD at current f/x) and exclusive timepiece that the eventual owners of these eight watches will be granted a two-day VIP motorsports event as guests of Pirelli.

Wow.  Just…wow.  What a spectacular looking watch this is!  And that car…truly a stunning beast!  In partnership with automotive design and engineering enterprise Italdesign, Roger Dubuis takes the covers off this magnificent eight-piece limited edition of the brand’s Excalibur Spider Single Tourbillon, in a combination of carbon and ceramic sporting the Italian national colours.  Founded in 1968 in Moncalieri, Italy, Italdesign has been creating cutting-edge prototype showcars ever since.  The launch of the Roger Dubuis model coincides with that of the new, bespoke Italdesign V10 supercar of which only five will be produced under the mark of “Italdesign Automobili Speciali”.

As for the Italdesign supercar, it will have a starting price of more than £1.3 million to as much as £2m by the time it hits the streets depending on individual trim, equipment and performance personalization options.  And what a looker it is:

If you’re thinking the model bears a passing resemblance to some of the Lamborghini designs, well, it’s probably due to the two cars share the same designer.  Filippo Perini was previously the head of design at Lamborghini and has masterpieces such as the Aventador and Huracán to his credit.

This latest alliance follows hot on the heels of another luxury match made in heaven between Roger Dubuis and iconic Italian tire manufacturer, Pirelli (launched at SIHH 2017).

The eight pieces will be available exclusively in Roger Dubuis boutiques and priced at $169,000.

For 2018, Roger Dubuis again pushes the envelope with several new bold and colorful design iterations in its iconic Excalibur line in conjunction with partners Perfect Fit Pirelli and Raging Mechanics Lamborghini Squadra Corse at SIHH 2018.  Seen here is the new Excalibur Aventador S in a blue and red colorway, featuring RD’s new double sprung caliber with jumping second.

45mm, multi-layer carbon C-SMC carbon case, Poinçon de Genève, automatic mechanical RD103SQ caliber with double sprung balances with differential (40 hrs)

The watch has a bi-material strap with black rubber base and neptune blue inlay, red stitching, RD pattern on the inside of the strap and a titanium black DLC clasp with adjustable folding buckle and quick release system.

The RD103SQ caliber works at a 2 x 4 hz frequency, giving it a better resistance to gravity effects and therefore a higher precision. That is the reason why the watchmakers at Roger Dubuis have chosen to develop a jumping second in order to emphasize the ultimate precision of this caliber.  The exclusive skeleton double sprung balances in the caliber are directly inspired from the supercar world and has been specifically developped with RD partner Lamborghini Squadra Corse.  Note: images shown below are the same caliber, but with a color-set from a different model

Extending its partnership with Pirelli tires, Roger Dubuis presents the new testosterone-filled Roger Dubuis Excalibur Pirelli Sottozero.  Not for the faint of heart (nor bank account), the macho watch has double flying tourbillons (5 and 7 o’clock) and a multi‑colored power reserve indicator at 9.  The strap features rubber inlays from Pirelli – adorned with legendary tread motifs reproducing the profile of a Pirelli Cinturato (all season) tire on the bottom and Pirelli Sottozero (winter tire) on the top.  It is powered by RD’s new RD105SQ hand‑wound calibre with power‑reserve indicator and the signature blue Astral Skeleton which takes its rightful place up top of the highly skeletonized “dial.”
